The Meaning Behind Our Eid & Ramadan Designs
Where It Began
Designing our Eid and Ramadan collection for Pillars London was an adventure from day one. At first glance, you might think, “Oh, another moon-and-star wrapping paper set?” But here’s the thing…while traditional Islamic motifs are beautiful, so many designs rely heavily on green-and-gold crescents and stars. Gorgeous, yes, but a little predictable. We wanted to create something that felt fresh, playful, and distinctly modern.
Our journey started with inspiration. We explored traditional geometric patterns, lanterns, and calligraphy, but we wanted to reimagine them for today. We asked ourselves: “How can we honour tradition while creating something that feels personal, joyful, and stylish?” The answer came in the form of unexpected colour palettes, subtle motifs, and playful reinterpretations.
Behind the Designs
Prayer Mats Collection
Take our prayer mats, for example. They’re rooted in centuries-old design, representing balance and harmony. But instead of rigid, formal lines, we experimented with irregular shapes, pops of pastel and layered patterns that feel vibrant without being overpowering. It’s a nod to tradition, yes, but with a twist that makes it feel like the patterns are celebrating too.
Lanterns Collection
Lanterns were another big inspiration. They’re a symbol of light, hope, and festivity, but instead of just drawing realistic lanterns, we created stylised, almost whimsical interpretations. The design is intended to add a quiet sense of warmth to any gift.
Moons Collection
And then there’s our take on moons and stars, especially for children. At first, we wondered if the classic crescent might feel too familiar, but when designed with little ones in mind, it becomes something joyful and playful. We used soft shapes, friendly stars, and cheerful pops of colour to create a pattern that feels fun and celebratory without losing its meaning. It’s the kind of wrapping that makes children pause, point, and smile before the gift is even opened.
The Power of Colours
Colour was a big part of the process too. We wanted to push the boundaries away from traditional colours by introducing blues, pinks, rich purples, and soft pastels that still feel festive but feel like Pillars London. We wanted our products to stand out while still feeling respectful of the traditions they celebrate.
Intentional Motif Design
We take great care to ensure our designs are respectful and rooted in tradition, while still feeling accessible to people from different backgrounds and communities. We want to pay tribute to the cultural and spiritual significance behind these symbols. By presenting them in a modern, approachable way, we hope our designs can spark curiosity, open conversations, and create small moments of connection around Islamic traditions, whether you celebrate them yourself or are discovering them for the first time.
